PACKING

Proper packing is essential whether the move is local or long distance.  You can either do the packing yourself or pay the mover for the service.  Remember that full responsibility for damages to packed goods will only be accepted by the mover when the packing and unpacking is done by their staff.  Packing services include:

 

-         the packing

-         the use of containers and boxes that are solid enough to insure maximum protection for your goods.

-         Unpacking at the delivery location and retention or disposal of all packing materials.

 

 

PAYMENT

Unless previous credit terms have been arranged, the mover will expect to receive payment at the delivery point, prior to unloading, in cash, money order or bank draft.  If you refuse, or cannot pay on delivery, the goods could be placed in storage at a further cost to you.  A deposit of 20% of linehaul rate must be paid in advance from all customers before move.  The charge will be US funds for cross border move (US à Canada or Canada à US).

 

PROTECTION ON LONG DISTANCE MOVES

The mover will carefully note the actual condition of your possessions before loading the van and you will be asked to verify that certain items are ‘marred’, ‘scratched’ or ‘chipped’.

 

On delivery, have the driver make specific notation on the inventory and delivery receipt in the event of any loss or damage which has occurred while the shipment was in possession of the mover.  Then promptly notify the carrier, IN WRITING, of the loss or damage.  They will send you forms that must be filled out and returned.  Unless the value of your possessions is declared and adequate protection requested or arranged, the carrier’s liability for loss or damage is limited to 60 cents per pound per article.  If you are concerned about the limit, then you should look into extra replacement protection through the moving company.  Either way, know exactly what coverage you are getting.

 

DELIVERY

Reputable firms are able to give you an accurate date of delivery, except for delays that are beyond the control of the firm.  It is vital that you or your representative be on hand to receive the goods.  Any delays for which you are responsible, that delay the unloading of goods could involve further charges for storage, unloading and reloading.
